Stay Spiritually Alert: Not Everyone Around You Is Sent by God!

One of the greatest gifts God has given every believer is the Holy Spirit. Yet many people overlook one of His most important roles, leading us in truth and giving us discernment. In a world where appearances can be deceiving, discernment is not a spiritual luxury. It is essential.

The enemy is strategic. His tactics are often subtle, making it difficult to recognize his influence if we are not walking closely with God. He will attempt to distort your perception, causing you to distance yourself from the very people God has sent to encourage, correct, strengthen, and equip you. At the same time, he may present people who appear supportive but whose influence slowly distracts, manipulates, discourages, or pulls you away from God’s purpose for your life.

This is why every relationship, opportunity, partnership, and influence should be brought before God in prayer. Not everyone who praises you is for you, and not everyone who lovingly challenges you is against you. Sometimes correction is an expression of love. Sometimes agreement is simply a trap that keeps you comfortable instead of helping you grow.

As believers, we must learn to look beyond personalities, emotions, and outward appearances. We must learn to discern the fruit, the motives, and the spiritual influence behind every connection.

Walk in the Spirit, Not in the Flesh

Our flesh is naturally drawn to what feels good, sounds affirming, and satisfies our emotions. The Holy Spirit, however, sees what we cannot. He reveals truth when deception is present. He exposes hidden motives. He warns us of danger before we recognize it ourselves. He also leads us toward relationships that strengthen our faith and draw us closer to Christ.

When we choose to walk in the Spirit, we become less dependent on feelings and more dependent on God’s wisdom.

Galatians 5:16 (NIV)

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

1 Corinthians 2:14 (ESV)

“The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”

Test the Spirit Behind Every Relationship

Scripture teaches us not to accept everything at face value. Every relationship has influence, and influence shapes direction. Before allowing someone close enough to influence your heart, your decisions, or your purpose, seek God’s wisdom.

Ask yourself:

• Is this relationship drawing me closer to Jesus or further away from Him?
• Does this person consistently produce peace, wisdom, humility, and godly fruit?
• Do I experience greater clarity or greater confusion after spending time with this person?
• Does this relationship encourage spiritual growth or spiritual compromise?
• Is this a divine appointment that God is using to shape me, or is it a distraction that is pulling me away from my Kingdom assignment?

The answers may not always come immediately, but God promises to give wisdom to those who sincerely seek Him.

1 John 4:1 (NIV)

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Matthew 7:15–16 (NLT)

“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act.”

Remain Spiritually Watchful

One of Satan’s greatest weapons is deception. He rarely presents temptation or destruction in obvious ways. Instead, he disguises it as something attractive, reasonable, or even beneficial. This is why discernment must remain active throughout every season of life.

The wrong relationships can delay your growth, cloud your judgment, weaken your convictions, and distract you from what God has called you to do. The right relationships may challenge you, stretch your faith, lovingly correct you, and encourage you to become more like Christ.

Not every difficult conversation is an attack. Not every open door is from God. Not every opportunity should be accepted simply because it looks good. Wisdom teaches us to seek God’s direction before making decisions.

“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness.”

Proverbs 27:17 (ESV)

“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Final Encouragement

Your relationship with God is your greatest safeguard against deception. Stay in His Word. Stay in prayer. Remain sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Ask God daily for wisdom, discernment, and the courage to obey His direction even when it is difficult.

Remember that your Kingdom assignment is valuable. Guard your heart, protect your peace, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide every relationship, every decision, and every step you take.

God is faithful to direct those who trust Him.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that is drawing you away from Christ and to strengthen every connection that is helping you grow in faith, wisdom, and purpose.
